Today, we are all French.

In the days after 9/11, glued to the television in my Brooklyn apartment, a plume of smoke still flowing overhead from downtown Manhattan, resisting the impulse to succumb to fear and hopelessness, an image flashed across the screen which brought tears to my eyes.
