February tomorrow!?!

Hard to believe that tomorrow is the first day of February. I’ve been slow to adjust to the fast pace of my new workplace, although in speaking with other teachers it seems we’re all in the same boat.

The problem is that the school expects more than could possibly be accomplished without neglecting students. Then they say ‘focus on the students’, with an implied ‘but still do all this other stuff’.

To his credit, my Principal overtly doesn’t pressure about ‘other stuff’, but it is that stuff that’s included in my appraisal portfolio.

They say time is an organization’s most precious resource, but maybe fail to remember that a teacher’s time with students is more precious than other time.

Monday snowstorm

A peaceful night of gentle snow morphed into a harrowing morning commute of stuck delivery trucks, overstuffed trains, delays, and freezing rain.

It was hard to feel a start to the day, but now it’s ending, so it must have started.

Excited for more snow on the weekend!

Honestly. I know it sounds sarcastic but I do actually want more snow.

Mortality and inspiration

Haven’t responded to the recent deaths of Lemmy, Natalie Cole, and David Bowie because they were celebrity musicians whom I appreciate but can’t claim to be fan. I do understand that they were all extremely kind and generous people who made timeless and monumental contributions to art and who will be missed.

Alan Rickman, however, has been one of my favorite actors since seeing him totally eclipse an impressive cast as The Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. His creative work is intimately intertwined with memories, both sweet and sour, from my childhood and adult life.

These events bring back to mind the death of my father a year and a half ago. I reflect on mortality and resolve to be inspired by the contributions of those whose lives have ended to continue to build my own.

The expression on a colleague’s face when they walk in while @ClassicalKUSC is blasting a raunchy section of Bartok string quartet.

Presence

I’ve seen a few posts about choosing a single word theme for 2016. Mine is Presence. Mainly a psychological and social goal, for me it means avoiding and ignoring distractions and devoting my full attention to one person, issue, task, matter, etc, at a time.
