Haven’t responded to the recent deaths of Lemmy, Natalie Cole, and David Bowie because they were celebrity musicians whom I appreciate but can’t claim to be fan. I do understand that they were all extremely kind and generous people who made timeless and monumental contributions to art and who will be missed.
Alan Rickman, however, has been one of my favorite actors since seeing him totally eclipse an impressive cast as The Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. His creative work is intimately intertwined with memories, both sweet and sour, from my childhood and adult life.
These events bring back to mind the death of my father a year and a half ago. I reflect on mortality and resolve to be inspired by the contributions of those whose lives have ended to continue to build my own.
